British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of entry passages down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

British military aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their valour," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British troops deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an attack claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
