Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
